A number of websites have recently reported that some laptops funded by the British government for school use were found to be pre-infected with the Gamarue.L worm.
The BBC states that teachers in Bradford discovered the malware when preparing the laptops for use. They said it appeared to be contacting servers in Russia, and they shared their findings in an online forum. Just as the previous years, AV-Comparatives “Approved Business Product” awards will be given away this year to qualifying products. In order to be certified as an “Approved Business Product” by AV-Comparatives, the tested products must score at least 90% in the malware Protection Test with zero false alarms and at least 90% in the overall real-world protection test with less than one hundred false alarms. The names of the certified products for July 2021 have been mentioned in the just released test report.

Mac – AV-Comparatives Releases report of 2021 Mac Antivirus test – 10 Internet Security Products for Mac put to Test
Research shows that macOS is vulnerable to malware and PUA too
Independent antivirus testing lab AV-Comparatives has released the report of its 2021 Mac certification test and review of security programs for Apple’s macOS operating system. Eight consumer products and 2 business solutions were put through their paces on macOS Big Sur systems.
Seven consumer products passed the test and were certified by the Austrian test institute. These are (in alphabetical order): Avast Security for Mac, Avira Antivirus Pro for Mac, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Clario App, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac and Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac. The two enterprise products, CrowdStrike Falcon Pro for Mac and FireEye Endpoint Security for Mac, were likewise approved.
To be certified, products had to demonstrate a high degree of protection against prevalent Mac threats, and produce no false alarms with common, legitimate software for macOS. Approved products also had to provide protection without slowing the system down, have real-time protection, carry out essential functions reliably, and avoid confusing the user with misleading alerts and so on.
Malware research by AV-Comparatives has shown that viable malicious programs targeting macOS are still being produced, and that Mac users are not immune to cyberattacks. There has been rapid growth in potentially unwanted applications (PUA) for Mac recently. Consequently, AV-Comparatives also tested each product against a wide array of potentially unwanted programs for macOS, and the results of this are included in the report.
Additionally, all participating products were tested for their ability to detect Windows malware. This ensures that Mac users do not inadvertently pass on malicious Windows files to family, friends or colleagues. Results of the Windows-malware detection test can also be found in the report.
As well as the test results, the report includes general security advice to Mac users on how to keep their systems safe. There is also an in-depth review of each product, describing its installation and daily use, and how it alerts the user when malware is found. Readers are thus given a picture of how easy the products are to use.

Um die Zertifizierung zu erhalten, mussten die Produkte ein hohes Maß an Schutz gegen gängige Mac-Bedrohungen nachweisen und durften keine Fehlalarme mit legitimer Software für macOS erzeugen. Die erprobten Produkte mussten außerdem den höchsten Schutz bieten, ohne das System zu verlangsamen und über Real-Time Protection verfügen. Independent security testing lab AV-Comparatives has published the report of its 2021 investigation into antivirus apps for the Android mobile platform. The Innsbruck-based institute tested 10 popular security apps with regard to malware protection, battery drain and anti-theft functionality. Third-party products made by Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, G Data, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Securion and Trend Micro were all scrutinised, along with Google’s built-in security measures in the Android platform.

The most widely used version of Google’s mobile OS, Android 10, was used for the test. Users can see how well the tested products performed on the most popular incarnation of Android.
“Even as Google’s built-in malware protection “Play Protect” improves, it still offers the weakest protection of all tested products. We highly recommend using a third-party app!” – Peter Stelzhammer, co-founder, AV-Comparatives.
In the malware protection test, over 3,500 recent malicious applications for the Android operating system were used. The results clearly showed the advantage of using a third-party antivirus product to protect smartphones against Android malware.
To ensure that the tested products do not achieve protection at the expense of high rates of false alarms, a false-positives test was also run, using 500 popular legitimate apps.
Anti-theft functionality was also considered. This allows a user whose smartphone has been lost or stolen to e.g. locate it, lock it, and wipe private data. Anti-theft features in the tested products were tested for reliable operation.
A past criticism of security programs is that they cause significant drain on the device’s battery. AV-Comparatives addressed this issue by running a battery-drain test. The effect each product has on battery life during everyday phone usage (making calls, surfing the Internet, watching videos and sending emails) was measured.
As well as the results of the tests, the report includes general security advice and information for users of Android devices. The security measures incorporated into Android 10 are considered, along with the effect these have on third-party security apps. Security tips for Android users are also provided.

Das Innsbrucker Institut testete 10 populäre Sicherheits-Apps hinsichtlich Malware-Schutz, Akkuverbrauch und Anti-Diebstahl-Funktionalität. In dem Test zum Schutz vor Malware wurden über 3.500 aktuelle bösartige Anwendungen für das Android-Betriebssystem verwendet. Die Ergebnisse zeigten deutlich den Vorteil der Verwendung eines Antivirenprodukts eines Drittanbieters zum Schutz von Smartphones vor Android-Malware.
Um sicherzustellen, dass die getesteten Produkte den Schutz nicht auf Kosten einer hohen Rate an Fehlalarmen erreichen, wurde auch ein False-Positives-Test mit 500 beliebten legitimen Apps durchgeführt.
Auch an eine Anti-Diebstahl-Funktionalität wurde gedacht. Diese ermöglicht es einem Benutzer, dessen Smartphone verloren oder gestohlen wurde, es z. B. zu orten, zu sperren und private Daten zu löschen. Anti-Diebstahl-Funktionen in den getesteten Produkten wurden auf zuverlässige Funktion geprüft.
Ein früherer Kritikpunkt an Sicherheitsprogrammen ist, dass sie den Akku des Geräts stark belasten. AV-Comparatives hat sich dieses Problems angenommen und einen Battery-Drain durchgeführt. Gemessen wurde die Auswirkung jedes Produkts auf die Akkulaufzeit bei alltäglicher Telefonnutzung (Telefonieren, Surfen im Internet, Ansehen von Videos und Senden von E-Mails).
